The people of Sylhet will have to stay under water for five more days. The image of Sylhet city will return to its previous state after the flood waters started to decrease continuously. However, the Bangladesh Water Development Board has said that steps are being taken to prevent the people of Sylhet from becoming victims of such floods.

On Saturday (May 21), SM Shahidul Islam, Additional Chief Engineer (Pur) of Sylhet North-East of the office of the Chief Engineer (Pur) of the Water Development Board, told the Dhaka Post. As a result, the flood situation is not likely to increase in Sylhet. In this situation, the people of Sylhet will have to stay under water for five more days. We are building new dams where the dams have broken in the floods. ‘

SM Shahidul Islam said, “The rivers and canals in Sylhet are being dredged. We are studying the rivers here for dredging. Even if the course of the river Surma in Sylhet is right, it will have to be dredged. A new project is being undertaken for this purpose. The DPP of the project has not been prepared yet, but the feasibility study is underway, ”he said.

Besides, the flood-hit area has been without power for the last one week. Although water has started flowing from different parts of the city at present, many people have fallen victim to various water borne diseases due to the floods. Flood-stricken people are at risk of diarrhea, skin diseases, fever and cold-cough in 12 wards of the city.

Apart from this, the water treatment plant of the city corporation located in Mendibagh area of Sylhet city has also been submerged in the flood water. The water supply from that plant is cut off.
