Speakers for ensuring formulating, applying laws for gender equality

Speakers at a roundtable here today called for not only formulating laws, but also ensuring applying those to make sure gender equality in the country. “The women in our country are making huge progress for the last one decade. But they are yet to utilize their full potential. We are seeing gender inequality in different sectors. To get rid of this, we have to ensure applying the concerned acts,” they said. The speakers said these at a roundtable organized by online news portal bbarta24.net and IP TV Jagoron TV in the capital. Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (administration) Professor Dr Muhammad Samad addressed the roundtable as chief discussant, while researcher  and social activist Barrister Farzana Mahmud presented the key-note speech at the programme. Presided over by bbarta24.net Editor Bani Yasmin Hasi, the roundtable was conducted by bbarta24.net feature editor Samina Bipasha. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the position of women in the highest level of the society, be it in police, administration, politics or judiciary, is remarkable. Women are achieving these through their talent. Because of the contribution of the present government, the equity between men and women are adequately seen,” Professor Dr Muhammad Samad said.

While talking about expectations from the ruling Awami League in establishing gender equity, senior journalist and Global Television CEO Syed Ishtiaque Reza said we have high hopes on Awami League as only they have as many as 24 percent women representing them in the parliament. University of Dhaka Professor Dr Kaberi Gayen, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Cardiology Department Prof Dr Jahanara Arju, Bangladesh Awami Jubo Mohila League vice-president Advocate Kohely Quddus Mukti and Anti-Corruption Commission Director DR MM Mazedul Islam, addressed the function, among others.
