A pregnant woman named Salma Begum, 30, committed suicide by hanging herself in Itna Village of Itna Union in Lohagara Upazila of the district on Friday night.

The body of the deceased was handed over to the family after the autopsy on Saturday, said Lohagara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shariful Islam.

According to police and family sources, about a year and a half ago, Shahabub Sheikh of Lohagara Upazila met the woman named Salma through TikTok. At one stage, a love relationship developed between them. A few days later, they got married. Salma Begum had married earlier. Meanwhile, Shahabub Sheikh has a wife, a son, and a daughter. Marital strife arose in their family after marrying Salma. Salma Begum committed suicide by hanging herself by tying a veil to the ceiling of her house on Friday night. However, the family of the deceased Salma claims that her husband Shahabub Sheikh and his family members forced their daughter to commit suicide.

Regarding these allegations, the housewife’s brother-in-law Tipu Sheikh said, “My sister-in-law was 5 months pregnant, and my brother has a first wife and three sons and daughters. My brother works on a ship. He is now in India. We did not torture Samla Begum in any way.”

In this connection, Lohagara Police Station OC Md Shariful Islam said that the body of the deceased was handed over to the family after the autopsy on Saturday. Legal action will be taken in this incident.
