BGB seizes smuggled goods worth Tk 155.59 crore in December
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled goods worth more than Taka 155.59 crore during anti-smuggling operations conducted across border areas and other parts of the country in past December. BGB Public Relations Officer Md Shariful Islam confirmed the seizure. The seized contraband included 2 kg 63.38 grams of gold, 14,883 sarees, 26,100 three-piece/shirtpiece/chadar/blankets, 26,520 ready-made garments, 9,883 meters of cloth, and 443,646 cosmetic items. The haul also comprised 16,954 pieces of imitation jewellery, 3,386,882 fireworks, 11,119 cubic feet of wood, 4,639 kg of tea leaves, 10,099 kg of betel nuts, 23,130 kg of coal, 708 cubic feet of stone and 176 cubic feet of sand.
Other seized items included plastic and electronic goods, mobile phones and accessories, glasses, spices, sugar, onion, garlic, fertilizer, pesticides, diesel, chocolates, and livestock including 865 cows and buffaloes. BGB also seized a stone statue and seized a large number of vehicles, including trucks, pickups, private cars, microbuses, boats, motorcycles, CNGs, and bicycles used in smuggling activities. During the operations, BGB also recovered a significant cache of weapons, including 12 foreign and locally made pistols, one rifle, three hand grenades, 16 magazines, 336 rounds of ammunition, one mortar shell, 17 kg of gunpowder and several other weapons.
A substantial quantity of narcotics was also seized in December. These included 911,982 Yaba tablets, 354 grams of heroin, 2,101 bottles of Phensedyl, 7 kg 439 grams of crystal meth (ice), 8,999 bottles of foreign liquor, 272.5 liters of locally made liquor, 1,207 bottles of canned beer, 1,794 kg of marijuana, 232,264 packets of bidis and cigarettes, and thousands of narcotic tablets, injections, syrups, and other medicines. BGB officials said that 171 smugglers were arrested for their involvement in drug trafficking and other smuggling activities.
In addition, 425 people were detained for illegal border crossings, including 134 Bangladeshi citizens, 15 Indian citizens, and 276 Myanmar nationals. Legal action has been initiated against all detainees. BGB authorities reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening border security and continuing strict operations to curb smuggling, drug trafficking, and illegal cross-border movement.
