India Refuses to Extradite Hasina
Sreeradha Datta, a professor specialising in South Asian Studies at India’s Jindal Global University, says the court’s decision against Hasina was expected, but India will not extradite the Bangladeshi fugitive former prime minister. “Under no circumstances is India going to extradite her,” she said. “We saw in the last year and a half that relationships between India and Bangladesh are not at their best, and have been fragile on many occasions.”
Datta said the death sentence against Hasina was expected. “One saw the mood in the country. Everyone expected a pretty harsh trial coming her way,” she said, adding that international human rights observers agree that the tribunal’s proceedings in Bangladesh followed the country’s legal system.
“Nobody is in any doubt about crimes committed against unarmed students. There is evidence that PM gave direct orders to shoot,” Datta said. “The Awami League will try to build a counternarrative, but largely, Bangladeshis believe that crimes against humanity were committed by Hasina."
