Dialogue Urges Inclusive, Climate-Resilient Urban Development in Rajshahi
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton today said coordinated efforts by government agencies, development organisations, the private sector and civil society are essential to ensure safe and sustainable housing for all. “The city corporation is working to expand civic amenities, develop infrastructure, improve healthcare services, conserve water bodies, manage waste, protect the environment and build climate-resilient infrastructure," he said.
He was speaking at an urban dialogue titled "Safe Housing for All: Building an Inclusive and Climate-Resilient Rajshahi" held at a city hotel. The dialogue was organised by the Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK). Riton said the current government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is implementing various initiatives, including the distribution of family and farmer cards, to improve the living standards of marginalised people.
He said the Rajshahi City Corporation is implementing a range of development initiatives to transform Rajshahi into a clean, green, liveable and inclusive city. Expressing hope that the recommendations and opinions shared at the dialogue would contribute to future urban planning and policymaking, he stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing urban challenges.
During the dialogue, participants presented recommendations on urban development, housing rights, climate change adaptation and sustainable urban management. BARCIK Regional Coordinator Shahidul Islam delivered the welcome address. Among others, Mizanur Rahman, chairman of Save the Nature and Life; river researcher Mahabub Siddiqui; and Nilufa Ismat Ara of the Urban Poverty Rights Implementation Committee attended the event. Representatives from various government and non-government organisations also participated in the dialogue.
