Government Plans to Achieve Self-Sufficiency in Milk Production: Farida
Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today said the government will take initiative to make country self-sufficient in milk production as the country is now spending Taka 4000 crore for importing 1.18 lakh tonnes of milk every year. “The government will take initiative for producing quality milk with a view to reducing our huge import dependency on imported milk annually,” she said.
The adviser said this while addressing as the chief guest a function organized on the occasion of the World Milk Day-2025 at KIB auditorium here. Farida Akhter said Bangladesh every year imports 1.18 lakh tonnes of milk from abroad at a cost of Taka 4000 crore. Under the situation, she said the government will take initiative to produce quality milk so that the country can fulfill its domestic demand.
If the government can provide subsidy in the agriculture sector, then why not for the livestock sector, she asked. While speaking at the function, the livestock adviser also urged all the concerned of the livestock sector to provide employment to those who have injured during July mass uprising at different segments in the livestock sector. “We should do something for those who have sacrificed bloods and lives for the country”, she added.
Mentioning the name of‘Village Milk Collection Center’, Farida Akhter criticized the people concerned for choosing such a English name and said in case of giving name to different project, authorities should pick Bangla name so that the common people can understand easily about the project. The adviser also urged the livestock officials to give importance on all sources of milk like buffalo and goat instead of only cow’s milk as the neighboring country is producing huge buffalo milk.
Regarding the incentives for the livestock farmers, the adviser said the government is sincerely considering how to provide adequate incentive to the livestock farmers. Senior ministry officials including the director general of the department of livestock services (DLS) and livestock farmers attended at the function.
