Salahuddin calls for future-ready UN Police at UNCOPS summit
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed called for a more adaptive, technology-driven and future-ready United Nations Police capable of responding effectively to evolving global security challenges.
"Tomorrow's security challenges cannot be addressed with yesterday's capabilities," he said while addressing at the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, according to a press release received here today.
The home minister said that tomorrow's security challenges require innovative approaches, highly skilled personnel and greater international cooperation as criminal networks become increasingly sophisticated and transnational.
Highlighting Bangladesh's longstanding contribution to United Nations peacekeeping operations, the minister said the country has undertaken significant reforms to better equip its police force to respond to evolving security challenges.
He proposed the establishment of a UN Police Knowledge and Innovation Network to facilitate the systematic exchange of expertise, best practices and professional knowledge among UN member states.
Describing climate change as an emerging security challenge, Salahuddin also proposed holding an annual Conference on Environment and Policing to strengthen international cooperation, preparedness and knowledge-sharing in addressing climate-related security risks.
The home minister said enhancing the capacity of UN Police through innovation, specialised expertise and modern technology would be crucial to maintaining effective peace operations in an increasingly complex global security environment.
