The number of diarrhea patients admitted to the International Center for Liberal Research in Bangladesh (ICDDRB) is reported to be increasing. According to ICDDRB sources, they have not seen so much patient pressure in the 60-year history of the organization. More than 50 patients are being admitted there every hour. Outbreaks of diarrhea have been reported in and around the capital Dhaka.

As there are more patients than hospital beds, diarrhea patients are being treated in two tents. ICDDRB doctors, nurses and health workers are struggling to cope with the patient’s stress. The hospital authorities also said that there was no sign of reduction in the patient’s pressure.

Outbreaks appear to be exacerbated during the monsoon season. In the last week of March, the incidence of diarrhea increases. And from mid-April to the last week, the rate rises sharply. About a month ago this year, why the incidence of diarrhea increased so much in and around Dhaka is a matter of research.

Diarrhoeal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old, and is responsible for killing around 525 000 children every year. Diarrhoea can last several days, and can leave the body without the water and salts that are necessary for survival. In the past, for most people, severe dehydration and fluid loss were the main causes of diarrhoea deaths. Now, other causes such as septic bacterial infections are likely to account for an increasing proportion of all diarrhoea-associated deaths. Children who are malnourished or have impaired immunity as well as people living with HIV are most at risk of life-threatening diarrhoea. Diarrhoea is defined as the passage of three or more loose or liquid stools per day (or more frequent passage than is normal for the individual). Frequent passing of formed stools is not diarrhoea, nor is the passing of loose, “pasty” stools by breastfed babies.

Diarrhoea is usually a symptom of an infection in the intestinal tract, which can be caused by a variety of bacterial, viral and parasitic organisms. Infection is spread through contaminated food or drinking-water, or from person-to-person as a result of poor hygiene.
Diarrhea is a waterborne disease. Experts say that in the heat of the day, people are drinking a variety of liquids, including sherbet, sugarcane juice, and lachchi, to quench their thirst. Which are being made in unhealthy environments and with unsafe water. Moreover, many are drinking unsafe water. Eating stale and unhealthy food in the open space on the sidewalk or in a restaurant. These can cause diarrhea to increase.

The public and residents moving in the capital need to be aware. Outside food is always more risky. Besides, the capital Dhaka is now the second most polluted city in the world. So now you have to refrain from eating food on the side of the road. At this time water should be boiled or purified with purification tablets. You should not eat any food without washing your hands. Must be clean and hygienic. Food vendors also need to be aware. Care must be taken at every level from production to storage-sales-service.

It is important to provide clean water in different parts of the city. We have to make arrangements so that people can easily drink pure water. For this, WASA and city authorities have to take concerted action.

Due to the development of medical science, diarrhea is not a complex disease at present. This disease can be prevented with a little awareness. Diarrhea usually involves eating saline, plenty of water and normal food. First aid like food saline can be done sitting at home. If this does not work, the infected patient should be taken to the hospital immediately.
