BDR Carnage Was a Planned Conspiracy Involving Political Leadership: Commission

The 2009 BDR massacre was an outcome of a long conspiracy and involvement of the then political leadership was found in it, said National Independent Investigation Commission Chairman Maj Gen (retd) ALM Fazlur Rahman today.   “The commission has found evidence of involvement of the then political leadership in the BDR carnage. Measures to divert the incident to a different direction and destroy its elements have also been found,” said the chief of the commission formed to re-investigate the 2009 BDR carnage. Fazlur Rahman briefed the media about the progress of the investigation into the BDR carnage at BRICM new building in Science Laboratory in the capital. Reading out a written statement, he said the commission is currently reviewing the information about the BDR massacre collected from different sources. He said the commission has already taken interview of 158 individuals and are preparing to take interviews of 50 others.

The commission recorded statements of six persons of martyrs’ families and two press conferences have already been held with the family inmates of the martyrs’ families in which they expressed their opinions and experiences. It also took interview of 15 officers who survived the BDR carnage and letters have already been sent to take written statement of 50 more officers through the Army Headquarters. A total of eight political leaders gave statements about the BDR carnage. Statements of three of them were taken in jails and three others in face to face while two fugitive political leaders gave statements through e-mail. The commission took statements of 55 military officers who were posted at various important posts during the BDR carnage. The officers included chiefs of army, navy and air forces, chiefs of various intelligence agencies and other high officials.

Interviews of 20 civilians including journalists, bureaucrats and members of the previous investigation committees were also taken. Apart from this, interviews of the then Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dhaka Metropolitan Commissioner (DMP) and other police officials were taken.  The commission took interviews of 25 BDR men who were sentenced to various jail terms. They have given description of the incident and information about the people involved in the carnage. The process of taking more interviews is underway.
