BNP eyes victory in Charghat-Bagha, Jamaat steps up campaign
Beyond calculations of victory and defeat, heightened enthusiasm is being observed among voters of Rajshahi-6 (Charghat-Bagha) constituency, as the country moves toward a competitive election after nearly 17 years. In the absence of the ousted Awami League, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party electoral alliance have emerged as the main contenders in the election. Although Jamaat-e-Islami contested previous elections in the constituency as an ally of the BNP, the two parties are competing separately this time.
As a result, from the very first day of campaigning, political activities by both BNP and Jamaat have intensified across the constituency. The two parties have been presenting differing views on various political issues as part of their campaign narratives. BNP leaders have highlighted historical and political differences with Jamaat-e-Islami while outlining their own positions and policies before voters. In response, Jamaat-e-Islami leaders have presented their perspectives and campaign messages to the electorate.
With expectations of a positive outcome in what is considered a BNP stronghold, Rajshahi District BNP convener and senior central committee member Abu Saeed Chand has been actively campaigning across the constituency, accompanied by party leaders and activists. Jamaat-e-Islami, on the other hand, has also intensified its campaign activities. Rajshahi District Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Principal Nazmul Haque is contesting for this constituency.
Considering that women constitute a large portion of voters, both parties have been carrying out outreach programmes in neighbourhoods, engaging with households and women voters, and encouraging participation in the electoral process. Jamaat candidate Principal Nazmul Haque said he is contesting the election with a commitment to moral values and public service.
He said, "Voters are aware of the activities and programmes of different political parties. They will make the right choice in the election." Principal Nazmul Haque expressed hope that, if elected, his party would work toward justice, transparency, public welfare and development, along with protecting people's lives and property. Meanwhile, BNP candidate Abu Saeed Chand said Rajshahi has long been regarded as a strong organizational base for the BNP. He noted that for a significant period after 1971, BNP candidates held parliamentary seats in the district.
He added that he remains confident about the election outcome and believes voters will support him through the ballot. He also mentioned that various campaign-related issues have emerged during the election period and expressed hope that the election process would proceed peacefully and fairly. Besides, Iqbal Hossain, former Upazila Member Secretary of the Jatiya Party, is contesting with the Plough symbol, while Abdus Salam Suroj, nominated by Islami Andolon Bangladesh, is contesting with the 'Hat Pakha' symbol.
