Jagannath University’s buses worth around Tk 3 crore are being destroyed because of negligence. A total of seven buses, Four in ‘Kathaltala’ in front of ‘Kala Bhavan’ and three in front of Science Faculty, have been lying idle for a long time. Moreover, three micros are lying dormant in the underground of the New Academic Building. Despite the problem of transportation of students, many parts including tires and engines are almost destroyed due to the fact that these buses are lying idle for a long time.
According to the university’s transport pool, the purchase price of each bus is about Tk 45 lakh, out of which 6 are purchased with the university’s own funds and one is a gift from Janata Bank Bangladesh Limited.
It’s also seen that, four buses are lying in ‘Kathaltala’ in front of ‘Kala Bhavan’ of the University and three in front of Science Faculty which are not used on any route. As a result, teachers and students are not benefited by the buses. On the other hand, due to the cars lying inside the small campus, the space is occupied and the environment of the campus is spoiled. Besides, the equipment of these buses is getting damaged and there is a fear that these buses will become unusable later .
Jagannath University Transport Pool’s Administrator Professor Abdullah-Al-Masud said, we have a total of 56 vehicles in our transport pool, none of which is worth wasting or discarding. The main problem is the driver crisis. We need additional 14 drivers, if not at least 5 drivers, management becomes difficult, he added.
He complained and said, “I don’t know why UGC is treating us like this, even though we have repeatedly applied to them for the appointment of driver employees, the higher officials can say well why they are not appointing the required manpower.”
He also said, we have given demand to UGC. Once our new drivers are appointed, the fallen cars will be repaired and routed.
Jagannath University’s VC Imdadul hauq said,we have a lot of limition that,s why we cant do whatever we want. I am aware of the breakdown of the buses and am talking to the Transport Department to fix them. If not, I will arrange for them to be removed from the campus, he added.
