National Biotech Olympiad held at JU

A day-long Biotech Olympiad was held at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Friday amid excitement and festivities.

Biotech Club of JU Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering department organized the olympiad with the slogan ‘Jibon Dharay Notun Beg, Sombriddhir Jonno Biotech.’

Acting Vice-Chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University Prof Mehedi Hasan Khan inaugurated  the day-long program at JU School and College in the morning.

After lunch break, a special science relevant discussion session took place  for invited guests at Zahir Raihan Auditorium of the university.

In the session, Dr. Hasina Khan, UGC professor and Independence Awardee fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences, delivered a speech in terms of her research life in the Biotech arena and also thanked the hosts of the program.

Later, JU Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Sheikh Monzurul Haq handed over the prizes and addressed the prize-giving ceremony as the chief guest.

He said, “I hope that the initiative which is taken by the Biotech club encourages the students to be acquainted with the biotech arena and also enhance the skill of generating new ideas.”

Chairman of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE) department and chief adviser of Biotech Club Prof Umme Salma Zohora said, “We are very happy to arrange the olympiad. This type of arrangement will help to make the biotech sector more prosperous and increase awareness as well as increase among the students about biotechnology.”

Club secretary Raihan Manir ensured that around 1200-students participated in the olympiads from various schools, colleges and universities across the country. The olympiad arrangement committee conducted the test into 3 steps.

The Prize-giving and discussion session was presided over by Prof Umme Salma Zohora while JU Pro-VC Prof Monzurul Haq present as the chief guest, acting Vice-chancellor of Sylhet Agricultural University Prof Mehedi Hasan Khan, dean of Biological Sciences of the university Prof Md. Nuhu Alam, faculties of BGE department from different universities, among others, were present as the special guests.

Meanwhile, Biotech Club conducts various scientific as well as social activities since its establishment.
