Students of the A F M Kamal Uddin and Shaheed Salam Barkat Halls of Jahangirnagar University (JU) jointly formed a human chain on Monday morning.
Over 200 students from the halls formed the human chain to urge the university authorities to start the reconstruction of the demolished mosque adjacent to their halls in front of the new registrar building.
Addressing the human chain, a resident of A F M Kamaluddin Hall and Urban and Regional Planning Department student Musa Bhuiyan said, “You are well informed that the university administration has demolished the risky mosque beside our two-student dormitories. In response to our request, the university administration then created a temporary structure to use as a mosque in the interim. Unfortunately, there is not enough space for the residents of two dorms to perform ‘Namaz. We urge university authorities to solve this crisis soon.”
The human chain speakers gave an ultimatum to begin mosque reconstruction by November 30.
Conducted by a resident of Shaheed Salam Barkat Hall and a Chemistry Department student Rafi Ahmed while many others delivered speeches about the problem.
JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Nurul Alam said in this regard, “We have already discussed the matter with our two respective hall provosts, including engineers, and a new design has also arrived in our hands. We hopefully start the construction in the first week of December.”
