In the beginning, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, the Speaker of the 11th Parliament, took her oath as an MP of the 12th Parliament. Subsequently, she read the oath for the newly elected parliamentarians.
The MPs of the Twelfth Parliament, including Sheikh Hasina, chanted their names and recited the oath with the Speaker. They affirmed, ‘I solemnly swear (or solemnly declare) that I will perform the duties I am about to undertake in accordance with the law and faithfully, have genuine faith and loyalty to Bangladesh, and will not allow the performance of my duties as a Member of Parliament to be influenced by personal interests.’
Following this, everyone signed the affidavit, indicating their respective seat names. The oath ceremony was conducted by Parliamentary Secretary AKM Abdus Salam. After the swearing-in ceremony, a tea event was organized for the new MPs in the VIP cafeteria of the Parliament.
Awami League President Sheikh Hasina secured her fifth term as the leader of the parliament by winning the 12th National Parliament election. MP Matia Chowdhury became the deputy leader, and MP Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury Liton assumed the position of chief whip.
During the meeting, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader proposed Sheikh Hasina’s name as the leader of the majority party. Current Chief Whip Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury Liton supported the proposal, and it was unanimously accepted.
In addition to the election of the parliament leader, the deputy leader was also elected. Matia Chowdhury, previously the deputy leader in the 11th National Assembly, retained the position for the 12th National Assembly. Furthermore, it was decided to re-elect the current Speaker, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, and Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku. Noor Alam Chowdhury was chosen as the Chief Whip in the 12th National Parliament.
Awami League secured an absolute majority with 225 seats in the 12th National Parliament elections on January 7. On Wednesday morning, the newly elected Members of Parliament were sworn in, with Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina setting a new record.
Notably, Sheikh Hasina’s leadership has created a historic milestone, serving as the head of government for an unprecedented duration in a democratic setting. She has set records by becoming the prime minister for four consecutive terms and a total of five times.
Sheikh Hasina initially assumed the role of Prime Minister on June 23, 1996. Subsequently, she took the oath as Prime Minister on January 6, 2009, for her second term. Following that, she led as Prime Minister for the third time in 2014 and the fourth time in 2019. In 2024, she embarked on her fifth term as Prime Minister, solidifying her position as the leader of the parliament for the fifth time, a remarkable accomplishment in the democratic history of Bangladesh.
Additionally, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, along with the newly elected 298 Members of Parliament, took the oath as members of the 12th Parliament. The current Speaker, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, was the first to take the oath as a Member of Parliament at 10 am on Wednesday, having been elected from the Rangpur-6 seat in this election.
Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has secured her fifth consecutive re-election, with her party claiming a majority of seats amid an opposition boycott. The counting process is still underway, according to an election official.
Pledging commitment at the Bangladesh Ministerial Meeting reflects a solemn dedication to public service and governance. The oath-taking ceremony symbolizes a promise to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and the welfare of the nation. This act not only marks the formal beginning of a ministerial tenure but also signifies a shared commitment among leaders to work collaboratively for the betterment of the country. It is a moment that embodies the responsibility and duty that comes with public office, emphasizing the importance of serving the people with integrity and dedication.
Subsequently, she recited the oath together with Sheikh Hasina and other Members of Parliament. Winners from national parties and independents also took the oath.
With this, the 12th parliament was officially formed in Bangladesh.
It is stated that the new cabinet will be formed on Thursday afternoon.
The Prime Minister and new ministers will be sworn in at Bangabhaban at 7 pm on Thursday. The ruling Awami League is set to form the government for the fourth consecutive term after securing the majority of seats in the recently concluded 12th National Parliament elections.
The Awami League won 222 seats in the January 7th election without BNP. However, the alliance leaders secured two more seats by being elected on the boat symbol. Jatiya Party obtained 11 seats, and Kalyan Party secured 1 seat. Notably, independent candidates won a record 62 seats, with most of them being Awami League leaders.
Although the election was held in 299 constituencies, the result of one constituency has been postponed due to disturbances. The new government is scheduled to be sworn in at Ganabhaban on Thursday evening, with most members of the current government expected to retain their positions.
According to the ceremony protocol, President Mohammad Sahabuddin will first administer the oath to the Prime Minister, followed by other Ministers and Ministers of State.
Sheikh Hasina, President of the Awami League, will lead the new cabinet as the head of government. This marks her fifth term as Prime Minister, setting a record in the history of Bangladesh.
The exact number and identities of the new cabinet members remain unknown. However, given that several state ministers from the previous government did not win the election, it is anticipated that several new faces may be added to the cabinet. The Cabinet Secretary mentioned that approximately 1500 guests, both domestic and international, will be invited to the cabinet swearing-in ceremony.
The Election Commission released the gazette of the elected members on Tuesday following the January 7th election. In the realm of governance, the act of taking an oath is a solemn commitment to serve the nation with dedication, integrity, and a sense of responsibility. Recently, at a significant Bangladesh Ministerial Meeting, leaders stepped forward to swear their allegiance, marking a crucial moment in the country’s political landscape.
The oath-taking ceremony is more than a ceremonial formality; it symbolizes a binding contract between the leaders and the citizens they represent. It signifies a pledge to uphold the principles of justice, uphold the constitution, and work tirelessly for the well-being of the nation.
As ministers took their oaths, the atmosphere was charged with a sense of duty and anticipation. This moment encapsulates the gravity of the responsibilities entrusted to these leaders, who hold the key to shaping policies, driving development, and steering the nation towards progress. The oath represents a commitment to ethical governance, promising to lead with transparency and accountability. It is a public declaration that the leaders will act in the best interest of the people, fostering an environment where trust and confidence in the government can flourish.
Furthermore, taking the oath at a ministerial meeting reflects the collective will of the government to tackle pressing issues and address the needs of the population. It is a call to action, a promise to confront challenges head-on, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and just society.
In the broader context, this ceremony serves as a symbolic bridge between leadership and the citizenry. It reaffirms the democratic principles that underpin the nation, emphasizing that those in power are bound by a shared vision of progress, prosperity, and unity.
Leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which abstained from the Sunday general elections, announced intentions to escalate their anti-government campaign through a peaceful public engagement initiative starting Tuesday, denouncing the polls as “fake”.
As citizens, witnessing the oath-taking ceremony fosters a sense of connection and shared purpose. It serves as a reminder that governance is a collaborative effort, requiring both leaders and citizens to actively participate in the journey towards a better future.
