Ekushey Padak-winning renowned dancer and actress Zeenat Barkatullah has passed away (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un).
She breathed her last at her home in Dhanmondi in the capital on Wednesday (September 20).
Actor’s Equity president Ahsan Habib Nasim and Naznin Musabbir Ruchi, niece of Zeenat Barkatullah, confirmed this sad news.
Ahsan Habib Nasim said that Zeenat Barkatullah passed away at her home in Dhanmondi at around 4:45 pm.
Zeenat Barkatullah is survived by her two daughters.
Zeenat Barkatullah was the beloved wife of the late Mohammad Barkatullah, a distinguished television personality, and the mother of renowned small-screen actress Bijori Barkatullah.
Earlier in March, Zeenat was admitted to a private hospital in Dhaka due to complications stemming from a lung infection and internal bleeding in her brain.
Tragically, on August 3, 2020, her husband Mohammad Barkatullah, succumbed to Covid-19.
In her illustrious career, Zinnat Barkatullah served as the director of the production department as well as the dance and music departments at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
She received acclaim performing Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Manipuri and folk dance. She starred in more than 80 small-screen dramas.
Zeenat Barkatullah debuted on the small screen with the drama ‘Maria Amar Maria’ in 1980, subsequently staring dramas like ‘Ghore Baire’, ‘Osthai Nibas’, ‘Boro Bari’, and ‘Kotha Bola Moyna’, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
Zeenat Barkatullah received Ekushey Padak in 2022 for her contribution to dance.
She also received prestigious awards, including the UNESCO award, Natya Sabha Award, BACHSAS Award and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award.
