Fuel pressure to be managed through subsidies: Zahed Ur Rahman
Adviser to the Prime Minister on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Zahed Ur Rahman, has said that although there is a slight shortage in fuel supply, the situation remains under control as the government works to ease pressure through subsidies and strict monitoring. "Operations have been intensified to prevent illegal hoarding and smuggling of fuel," he said. He made the remarks while speaking at a press briefing held at the PID conference room at the Secretariat here today.
Rahman also highlighted that the introduction of the "Krishak (Farmer) Card" in the agriculture sector is in its final stage. The programme is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on the first day of Pohela Boishakh, with an allocation of Tk 1,150 crore under the Annual Development Programme (ADP). The adviser said the government has made notable progress across sectors in a short time while continuing efforts to tackle ongoing challenges.
Under the Ministry of Water Resources, canal excavation has begun in 54 districts, which is expected to boost agricultural production and improve water management. He also noted that the Ministry of Commerce successfully kept markets stable during Ramadan, with the Directorate of Consumers' Right Protection conducting drives that resulted in 1,606 cases and fines totaling Tk 2.64 crore. Essential commodities were also distributed at subsidized prices through truck sales.
On the health front, the adviser expressed concern over a recent outbreak of Measles but assured that vaccination campaigns are underway in 18 upazilas. A nationwide vaccination drive will begin on May 3, with a target to complete it by May 21. He acknowledged that past negligence contributed to the vaccination challenges. Regarding law enforcement, he said the Ministry of Home Affairs is conducting eviction drives to free footpaths from illegal occupation. In the water transport sector, steps are being taken to bring all vessels under digital registration.
In environmental efforts, the government has produced 1.5 crore saplings and reclaimed around 198 acres of forest land for reforestation. Initiatives are also underway in youth and sports development, including a talent hunt program set to launch on April 30, alongside financial support for 129 international medal-winning athletes. On expatriate welfare, he confirmed that the bodies of Bangladeshis killed in Middle East conflicts have been repatriated, with financial support announced for their families - Tk 3 lakh in assistance and Tk 10 lakh in insurance coverage.
In the transport sector, plans are in place to introduce GPS tracking in public vehicles, remove unauthorized bus counters, and enhance security at ferry terminals. Additionally, cultural initiatives are being introduced to promote reading habits among students through new competitions. "The government is working in a coordinated manner in all sectors. Despite limitations, we are committed to improving the quality of life of the people," the adviser added.
