Department of Youth Development under Ministry of Youth and Sports has undertaken multifarious holistic approaches to create skilled human resource by providing skill improving training to the unemployed youth according to the local demand to gain the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Targets and Prosperous Bangladesh in line with the effort of the incumbent government led by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The implementation of various skill development programs is reducing unemployment and poverty in the country by engaging trained youth to self -employment, told Md Azharul Islam Khan, Director General of Department of Youth Development to the Daily Tribunal at his office in the capital.
Talking on the success of his department, he informed that to make Bangladesh a middle-income country, we need to make our large youth a key driver of development and growth.
Keeping that goal in mind, the Department of Youth Development has been conducting various types of vocational training for job-seeking youth and young women according to SDG target. The Directorate of Youth Development has provided training to a total of 67,65,049 youth since its inception till June, 2022. Out of this, 23,02,296 self-employed persons till December.
As per 8th Five Year Plan (2020-2021 to 2024-2025) training target is 19,25,000 people while the training target for the financial year 2022-23 is 2,74,122 people.
For the overall welfare of the youth, the Department of Youth Development is implementing microfinance programs aimed at engaging the trained youth in income generating activities in the form of self-employment.
Trained youth are contributing significantly to socio-economic development by getting loan assistance. Directorate of Youth Development is conducting 03 (three) types of microfinance programs across the country with the objective of involving the trained youth in productive activities
“Alongside the financial assistance, we are providing support to develop a national plan of action for implementation of National Youth Policy and Youth Development Index. The Project is being implemented at Jamalpur, Borguna, Patuakhali and Bogura districts with the financial assistance of UNFPA which will be implemented by 2023”, added Islam.
The aim of the project is to train up 3,29,130 persons and to engage 1,64,565 persons in self-employment during project period, he said adding that the construction of Juba Bhaban Project aims to transfer the unproductive youth into well organized, orderly and productive power through conducting skill enhancing activities.
Besides, the Sheikh Jamal Youth Training and Recreation Centre at Upazila Level Project targets to transfer the unproductive youth into well organized, orderly and productive power through conducting skill enhancing activities.
The Deputy Director’s Office along with Youth Training Centre in Rajshahi, Barishal, Feni and Narail targets to construct offices of DYD along with Youth Training Centre in Rajshahi, Barishal, Feni and Narail.
Apart from this, Technology Empowerment Centre on Wheels for Underprivileged Rural Young People of Bangladesh project is to create opportunities in computer training participation for the poor deprived youth in the rural areas and to create opportunities to take free training by keeping the poor youth to their own place.
The said project is enhancing competition competency of the rural poor youth in regard of ICT based job and to reduce ICT related knowledge between rural and city youths.
On the other hand, the construction of Sheikh Jamal Youth Training and Recreation Centre at Upazila level Project is facilitating to transfer the unproductive youth into well-organized, orderly and productive power through conducting skill-enhancing activities.
“Actually, youths are the most energetic, self-confident, creative and productive guiding force of the nation. Proper guidance and direction can bring them to the forefront of national development so that their potentialities are properly harnessed and they are transformed into valuable resources. The Department of Youth Development is committed to utilize the young force in making nation building activities”, Islam mentioned.
