Flood situation starts improving at chars, river basin in Gaibandha

Flood situation in chars and river bank areas of western sides of the river Brahmaputra started improving from yesterday as the water level of the river decreased in the last 24 hours. Abu Raihan, executive engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) here said water level of the river Brahmaputra decreased by 15cm during the period and the river was flowing 2 cm below its danger mark at Fulchhari point of the district. The chars located on the eastern sides of the river and river bank areas on the western sides of Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Shaghata upazilas in the district were flooded for flowing the river in the last few days above its danger level, he also said. The sufferings of the char dwellers and river bank areas on the western sides of the river were mounted as their houses and roads went under flood water, he added.

The union parishad chairmen of a number of flood affected unions said the flood victims faced acute pure water drinking as the tube wells went under flood water side by side with facing dried food during the flood. With the fall of water level in the river, the flood situation started improving in chars and riverbank areas, the executive engineer said adding that the flood situation would improve more in the upazilas in next few days. On the other hand, the water level of the river Ghagot blowing through the main land of the district decreased by 15 cm in last 24hours. Though the water level of the river decreased by 15 cm, it was flowing 27 cm above its danger level at New Bridge Road point of the district town, the Exen mentioned.

Talking to the BSS, deputy commissioner (DC) Oliur Rahman said the district administration sanctioned 80 tonnes of rice and Taka 15 lakh for cow fodder and TK 15. 50 lakh for baby food of flood affected areas of the district. The DC said he had visited a number of flood affected areas including chars of the upazilas in last few days and distributed food and cash money to the flood and erosion victims to mitigate their sufferings.
