The Election Commission (EC) is taking a tough stance on the five city corporation elections. The EC has said that any polling officer who induces or restrains anyone from voting during the election can be imprisoned for five years.
Deputy Secretary, Election Management Wing, Election Commission (EC) Atiyar Rahman has recently sent a letter in this regard to the returning officers.
According to the letter, any returning officer, assistant returning officer, presiding officer, assistant presiding officer, polling officer or any other officer or employee performing election related duties engaged any irregularities — induces any person to vote, restrains any person from voting, influence the voting of any person in any way and do any other act designed to influence the result of the election— will face at least six months to five years jail.
Gazipur City Corporation election will be held on May 25. Khulna and Barishal city elections will be held on June 12. According to the schedule, the scrutinizing of nomination papers in these two city elections is on May 18. The deadline for appeal against the returning officer’s decision is May 21. The deadline for disposal of appeals by the Appellate Authority is May 24 and last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 25. Allotment of symbols is on May 26.
Besides, Rajshahi and Sylhet City Corporation elections will be held on June 21. Last date for submission of nomination papers in this election is 23 May, scrutinizing is on 25 May. The deadline for appeals to the Appellate Authority is May 28. The deadline for disposal of appeals by the Appellate Authority is May 31. Last date for withdrawal of candidature is 1 June, allotment of symbols is 2 June.
