Salahuddin Ahmed gets travel pass, can return home

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, detained in India’s Shillong on charges of trespassing, has been granted a travel pass.

Bangladesh Mission in Guwahati on Tuesday (June 13), He was given the travel pass from Guwahati Bangladesh Mission around 11:00 pm on Monday (June 12).

Former State Minister has been in Shillong of Meghalaya in India since May 11, 2015. After being acquitted in the case against him on charge of infiltration, the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh said on Thursday that he can return home at any time.

The travel pass was issued on June 8 last. Now there are some legal processes in India, he will complete them. But before returning home he has to follow some rules of Indian government. Moreover, various ancillary matters including court papers are still due.

Salahuddin went missing on 10 March 2015 from Uttara of the capital city. Then 61 days later, on 11 May, he was recovered by local police in Shillong of Meghalaya, India. The Indian police at the time said that they had detained him after receiving a phone call from local people who said he had been wandering around in an unstable state.

After his rescue, a case was filed against him for trespassing in India. The trial ended on August 13, 2018, after nearly three and a half years of litigation. On October 26 of that year, Salahuddin Ahmed was acquitted in the case of trespassing. Later, the Indian government again appealed against the verdict. On February 28 this year, he was acquitted by the judge’s court in Shillong, India.

Salahuddin Ahmad was the APS of the then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia of BNP in 1991. He was elected Member of Parliament (MP) from Cox’s Bazar in 2001. He was made State Minister for Communications during the BNP-Jamaat coalition government. He was joint general secretary of BNP when he was arrested in Meghalaya. BNP made him a member of the party’s standing committee while he was in jail in India.
