Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today urged the BNP to return to the path of democracy by shunning the politics of conspiracy. He made the call while speaking at a discussion held at the AL’s Bangabandhu Avenue central office here, marking the Independence and National Day. AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting joining virtually from Ganabhaban here. Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said if the BNP creates any disorder in the country, the ruling AL along with the people will resist it. Mentioning that the AL is not afraid of any threat, he said the BNP, not the AL, would have to leave the field of politics one day if the party does not shun the polities of intrigue. BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman had left the country on undertakings, he added.

Claiming that at present the ruling AL is stronger and more united than that of any time of the past, the AL general secretary said the BNP demanded the next general elections be held under a neutral government. Ruling out the BNP’s demand, he said the next polls will be held under the neutral Election Commission, following the constitutional procedures. Highlighting the government’s success in different sectors, Quader said the government has already brought the whole country under electricity coverage. The World Bank, which withdrew funding from the Padma Bridge Project, has now admitted its mistake to this end, he said, adding that construction of the bridge became possible to due to the visionary initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. AL presidium members Begum Matia Chowdhury, Dr Abdur Razzaque, Tofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and Advocate Qamrul Islam, joint general secretary and Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, organising secretary BM Mozammel Haque and AL central leader Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, among others, spoke.
