Vivo phone explodes in Islamic University student’s pocket in Kushtia; student injured
A student of Islamic University in Kushtia has been injured after a Vivo-branded smartphone reportedly exploded in his pocket, amid rising concern over similar incidents involving mobile phones in the country.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning (June 24) while the student, Amirul Islam, was on his way to the university campus. He is currently undergoing treatment.
The victim said that the Vivo Y12 smartphone in his pocket suddenly became unusually hot after he left home. Before he could react, the phone exploded, leaving him injured.
He stated, “I left home around 10 am to go to campus. Suddenly the mobile phone in my pocket exploded. I was injured and I am currently receiving treatment.”
Meanwhile, concern over smartphone explosions has been growing following a series of similar incidents. On Sunday (June 21), a Vivo phone explosion in a residential area of Tongi, Gazipur, caused panic after a device overheated and burst into flames. Although no casualties were reported, a major accident was narrowly avoided, according to the affected family.
The family said a housewife, who was lying on the floor due to illness, noticed that her Vivo Y20 smartphone was overheating. She immediately informed other family members. Shortly after, the device began emitting thick smoke and was quickly taken to the balcony and thrown outside, where it exploded.
The family has called for a thorough investigation into the incident and demanded clarification of the cause.
Earlier, on June 14, a fatal incident involving an iQOO-branded smartphone, a sub-brand of Vivo, resulted in the death of Mizanur Rahman.
Reports said a fire broke out in his room during the night after the phone exploded while charging. He was later admitted to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in critical condition.
Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, resident physician at the National Burn Institute, said that around 95 percent of Mizanur Rahman’s body was burned and he later died during treatment.
No official response has yet been issued by Vivo Bangladesh regarding these incidents. Any statement from the company will be added if provided.
