Women and Children Affairs and Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain has emphasized a “zero-tolerance” approach toward violence against women and children. “We’re pursuing a “zero tolerance” policy on violation against women and children,” he said. He was speaking at a programme titled “Women and Child Protection in Election Manifesto: Political Parties' Promises and Future Actions,” organized by Plan International Bangladesh at a hotel in Gulshan here.

The minister has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights of women and children, promising strict implementation of policies outlined in political party manifestos ahead of the national elections. He stated that ensuring the safety, rights, and empowerment of women and children remains a top priority for the government. “We are not only making promises, we are working towards implementation,” he said, stressing the need for collective efforts by the state, society, and international organizations to prevent violence, protect child rights, and ensure access to education and healthcare.

Highlighting the importance of inclusive development, he noted that women and children constitute a significant portion of the population and that national progress is not possible without their empowerment and protection. He also pointed to several government initiatives, including support programmes aimed at women-led households, designed to promote self-reliance and direct access to benefits.

The minister claimed that the country has stringent laws in place for the protection of women and children and called for their proper enforcement. Addressing social challenges, he raised concerns about drug addiction among youth, describing it as a serious societal issue linked to crime. He called for stronger social resistance, effective law enforcement, and increased awareness to address the problem.

The minister further assured that more stringent measures and awareness campaigns would be introduced in the future, alongside strengthened collaboration between the government and non-governmental organizations. During the event, representatives from Plan International Bangladesh presented key recommendations, urging political parties to take firm action against child marriage, gender-based violence, and child labor, while also promoting education and employment opportunities for women.

The minister welcomed these recommendations, stating that the recommendations would be considered in future government initiatives. He also called for unified efforts from all political parties to ensure a safe and prosperous life for every woman and child. The programme brought together policymakers, political leaders, civil society representatives, and development partners, aiming to strengthen national and international awareness on women’s and children’s rights.
