Bangladeshi Racer Avik Anwar Injured in Crash at Sepang International Circuit

Avik Anwar, Bangladesh’s pioneering international motorsports champion, was injured in a severe car accident during Race 1 at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia on Saturday, July 26. The 39-year-old racer, celebrated for putting Bangladesh on the global motorsports map, is currently under medical observation and receiving treatment at the circuit’s medical centre. The incident was announced via a post from Anwar’s verified social media account, managed by his team, which said, “Avik’s car was involved in a fatal accident during Race One at the Sepang International Circuit. He is undergoing medical checks and treatment. Please keep him in your prayers.” Details of the crash remain limited, but the motorsports community and fans have flooded social media with messages of support. Images of the car wreckage and Avik’s damaged helmet were also shared. Earlier that morning, Anwar had shared his optimism, posting, “I secured P4 in yesterday’s qualifying lap. The car slid unexpectedly in Turns 5 and 6, but Insha Allah, I’ll fight for a podium for Bangladesh today!” His determination to compete for a top spot underscored his relentless passion, despite the challenges faced during the qualifying round.
Anwar, a trailblazer in Bangladeshi motorsports, has competed in over 130 professional races, earning multiple podium finishes, including back-to-back first-place victories at the 2023-2024 Gulf Pro Car Championship in Dubai and a historic win in the 2023 Malaysia Championship Series Round 4 at Sepang. He made history as the first Bangladeshi to race on a Formula 1 track at Sepang in 2019 and debuted in the world’s oldest touring car race at the Dubai Autodrome in December 2024, securing podiums in both races. Known for his resilience, Anwar has overcome significant obstacles, including racing with injuries and competing solo in gruelling endurance races. His achievements have inspired a generation of motorsports enthusiasts in Bangladesh, where racing infrastructure remains limited. As Anwar undergoes medical evaluation, the motorsports world and his fans await updates on his condition, hoping for a swift recovery for the racer who has proudly raised Bangladesh’s flag on international circuits.
