Implementation of July Charter Hinges on Political Parties
National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz has said, “The main responsibility for implementing the July National Charter depends on the political parties. The political leaders will pave the way for the implementation of the issues we have agreed upon. The commission will be there as a catalyst, formally and informally.”
He made the remarks on the last day of the second phase of dialogue between the Consensus Commission and political parties at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday (July 31). Representatives of 30 parties, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), CPB, Islami Andolan, and Gana Sanghati Andolan, participated in the discussion.
"Then, the final draft of the charter of state reform will be sent to the parties, and the much-awaited July Charter will be finalised based on their opinions," he said. The commission vice-chairman said in the initial phase of dialogue with political parties, consensus has been reached on the summaries of the recommendations given by the six reform commissions. Prof Ali Riaz said the background draft of the July Charter has already been shared with the representatives of the political parties and the commission is working on the amendment proposals given by the parties.
He hoped that the unresolved issues could be resolved through mutual talks with the parties. The meeting was also attended by Commission members Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr Badiul Alam Majumder, Dr Md Ayub Mia, Dr Iftekharuzzaman and Safar Raj Hossain and Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Monir Haider.
