A coordination meeting with local stakeholders in the campaign on village courts was held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner on Sunday afternoon under the initiative of the Bangladesh Village Court Activation Phase-3 Project of District Local Government Department and in collaboration with UNDP and the European Union.

Sunamganj Local Government Department Deputy Director Mohammad Rezaul Karim chaired the programme, while Deputy Commissioner Dr Mohammad Ilias Mia was the chief guest.

Among others, Superintendent of Police Tofail Ahmed, Islamic Foundation Deputy Director Agriculturist Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, Derai Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sanjeeb Sarkar, Shalla UNO Piyas Chandra Roy, Madhyanagar UNO Ujjal Roy, Sunamganj Sadar UNO Sultana Jerin, Sunamganj District Social Services Office Assistant Director AK Azad Bhuiyan, Sunamganj senior journalist Mohammad Shahjahan Chowdhury, and BRAC District Coordinator AK Azad also spoke.

It was informed in the meeting that videos have been shown in each union for the promotion of village courts and training of the Upazila Resource Team on village courts, and training of accounting assistants-cum-computer operators and UP members have been completed. In addition, the promotion of village matters is ongoing through the village court promotion campaign, leaflet distribution and regular activities of various government and non-government organizations.

It was also informed in the meeting that as a result of the initiatives taken in the light of the decision of the last meeting, the number of cases received and disposed of by the village courts is gradually increasing. Therefore, the promotion of village courts is continuing in the ongoing activities through all departments.

It was also informed that the village courts can play a very important role in reducing the backlog of cases in the high court in the future. A total of 267 cases were received and 239 cases were disposed of in 88 unions through the village courts in the last three months of March and May, 2025.
