Tribute by BotTala Marks Anniversary of Rana Plaza Collapse

Theatre troupe BotTala on Friday paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the Rana Plaza collapse through a cultural event held at Rayer Bazar Badhya Bhumi Memorial in the capital Dhaka.

The event comprised a musical performance and a street play titled Jatugriha based on a true event at Tazreen Fashion, a garment factory at Ashulia, where more than 100 workers were killed in a fire on November 24, 2012.

Written by Samina Luthfa, Jatugriha was directed by Mohammad Ali Haider.

The play shows how a huge number of workers who came from across the country were burnt due to closing of the collapsible gate by the authorities during the fire.

The play also focuses on the poor condition of labour rights and shows how laws are being violated by the factory owners and the state always stands against the labour.

‘We have produced this play based on the Tazreen tragedy and we want to stage this play across the country because the life of workers is still unsafe,’ Mohammad Ali Haider said, adding that most garment workers could not get their wages and festival bonuses before the previous Eid-ul-Fitr festival.

The members of BotTala and cultural organisation Samageet also performed at the musical event.
