Popular singer, presenter, and social activist Dithi Anwar has expressed her aspiration to become a Member of Parliament, aiming to work on cultural development and policy reforms. She has collected and submitted a nomination form to contest for a reserved women’s seat from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), with interest in representing either Sylhet or Cumilla. Dithi Anwar is the daughter of the late renowned lyricist and film director Gazi Mazharul Anwar, who had a close association with former President Ziaur Rahman. Ziaur Rahman admired Anwar’s iconic song “Ekbar Jete Dena Amar Chotto Sonar Gaay” and had entrusted him with overseeing cultural activities within the party.

Under his guidance, the musical drama Ek Doshoker Bangladesh was staged nationwide, promoting nationalist ideals. Later, during the tenure of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, another musical production titled Dui Doshoker Bangladesh was performed across the country, in which Dithi Anwar was also involved. Over time, Gazi Mazharul Anwar served as president of JASAS, cultural secretary of BNP, and advisor to Khaleda Zia, remaining actively engaged with the party until his death. Following in her father’s footsteps, Dithi Anwar says she is committed to upholding his ideals through political engagement. She also highlighted the contributions of her father-in-law, Shafi Ahmed Chowdhury, a two-time elected MP from Sylhet-3, who established Latifa-Shafi Chowdhury Women’s Degree College. Dithi currently serves as the president of the institution, where around 3,000 students study free of cost. Outlining her vision,

Dithi emphasized the need to curb cultural degradation and introduce regulation in online content, particularly on platforms like YouTube. She also stressed the importance of implementing proper royalty systems for artists, noting that neighboring India has more structured support for musicians and their families. She further pointed out the issue of artists being marginalized based on political changes, stating her intent to ensure a fair environment for all cultural contributors. Reflecting on her own experience, she said she was unable to work with Bangladesh Television and radio for 15 years due to political circumstances. Dithi also expressed her desire to revitalize the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) and restore the vibrant cultural atmosphere of the past. “I have many plans centered around culture, and becoming a Member of Parliament is essential to implement them,” she said, adding that she is committed to serving with integrity if given the opportunity. Recently, Dithi participated in two programs celebrating Pohela Boishakh. She is also scheduled to perform live on Maasranga TV and ATN Bangla, and will appear at a musical event at Gulshan Club on April 24.
