India skipper Shubman Gill was on Friday forced to sit out of a warm-up match ahead of the two-Test series in Sri Lanka due to a finger injury, the country's cricket board said.

India are led by KL Rahul in the three-day game against Sri Lanka Cricket XI starting Friday at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo.

The opening Test will begin on August 15 at Galle. The second Test will be played between August 23-27 in Colombo.

"Captain Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India's practice on Thursday," the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement.

"As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm- up game against SLC XI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress."

The series will be India's first in the current World Test Championship (WTC) since the 2-0 home defeat to South Africa in November.

India are fifth in the WTC standings, which are led by Australia, with Sri Lanka sixth.
