Organized by the Shahrasti Upazila Administration in the district, a day-long training on village courts under Bangladesh Village Court Activation (Phase 3) Project of Local Government Division under Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry was held at the Upazila Parishad auditorium on Tuesday.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nigar Sultana inaugurated the training on village courts. Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Nirupam Majumder, Shahrasti Police Inspector (Investigation) Oli Ahmed, Upazila Social Services Officer Abu Ishaq, Youth Development Officer Shamsul Amin, Women’s Affairs Officer Maksuda Akhter, and Village Court Activation Project (Phase 3), Matlab Uttar and Shahrasti Upazila Coordinator Abdul Malek were present at that time.

Training was given on how village courts can help the rural people. Village court is a dispute resolution system at the local level that helps in getting fair justice. Everyone gets redress in a short time, at a low cost and very easily in the village court. There is no other cost other than the application filing fee in the village court. It helps in reducing the backlog of cases in the higher court in the village court.

A total of 16 types of disputes, like theft, riot, fraud, quarrel, dispute or fight, embezzlement of valuable property, unfair control and unfair detention, intimidation or threats, speaking with the intention of disrespecting or insulting the modesty of a woman can be resolved in the village court. Members of 10 Union Parishads of the upazila were present at the training.
