Classical music enthrals Barishal audience
An evening of classical music enthralled music lovers in Barishal on Saturday, as Sur Saki Sangeetalay organised a special programme at the Shabdabili Group Theatre auditorium on Sadar Road.
The programme began at 6:30pm, featuring 28 artistes performing different ragas from various traditions of classical music.
Veteran cultural personality Prof Dipankar Chakraborty delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the rich tradition of raga-based music in the Indian subcontinent and its influence on the region's musical heritage.
The programme opened with a collective rendition of Raga Yaman by artistes of Sur Saki Sangeetalay. Sarangi artiste Niloy Halder then performed a solo, followed by solo performances by Purnima Roy and Shreya Roy.
A lahari performance led by veteran tabla artiste Ganesh Chandra Das, one of the senior tabla artistes of the southern region, added another dimension to the evening.
The programme concluded with a solo rendition of Raga Kalavati by noted artiste and Sur Saki Sangeetalay Director Sanjay Halder.
During the event, Ganesh Chandra Das was felicitated with an uttariya by Imanul Hakim, former principal of Government Brajamohan College. Senior journalist and writer Arup Talukdar felicitated sarangi artiste Niloy Halder.
Cultural personalities, journalists, academics and music enthusiasts from different walks of life attended the programme.
Noted Nazrul Sangeet artiste Ruhul Amin Chowdhury said the event had given Barishal's music lovers a much-needed opportunity to enjoy classical music after a long time.
“I hope such an initiative will be organised every year,” he said.
