Ex-govt official held for insulting Prophet (PBUH)

The army has taken a former government official named Md Ahmed Ali, 61, into custody after he was beaten for insulting the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in Beruli of Baliakandi Upazila of the district.
The accused is the son of late Maqbul Molla of Tekati Village in Nababpur Union of the upazila and a retired union deputy assistant community medical officer.
On Sunday at 9 am, at one point during an argument at Md Hafiz Molla’s tea shop adjacent to the school intersection of Beruli Bazar, he insulted the Holy Prophet (PBUH). At that time, the local people protested and immediately beat him up and asked him to apologize. But he refused to apologize. Later, the local people informed the Baliakandi Police Station. The police arrived at the scene and tried to calm the situation. But when the situation went out of control, they locked the accused in the Union Parishad room. The crowd broke down the door of the Union Parishad and beat him up again. When the situation deteriorated further in the afternoon, the situation normalized with the joint efforts of the army and the police.
Later, the army arrested Md Ahmed Ali, assured of his maximum legal punishment and appealed to the locals to remain calm. Police, army, DB and other forces have been deployed at the scene to control the situation. The situation in the area is tense regarding the matter.
