GAU celebrates World Milk Day

Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) celebrated World Milk Day 2025 with vibrant festivities under the slogan “Let’s Celebrate the Power of Dairy.”
The day aimed to highlight the nutritional value of milk, its role in food security, economic impact on the dairy industry and the recognition of dairy farmers. The day-long celebration began on Sunday with an outreach programme to the university’s ‘Technology Village’ located in Kaultia, Gazipur. The programmes included milk feeding to primary school children and free milk quality testing. A colorful rally led by GAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr GKM Mustafizur Rahman started at 3:15 pm participated by teachers, students, staff and officials of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (FVMAS).
Later, a seminar jointly organized by FVMAS and the university’s Outreach Programme with support from the Livestock and Dairy Development Project (LDDP), was held at the Old Auditorium. FVMAS Dean, Professor Dr Mohammad Ali Zinnah, chaired the session, and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr GKM Mustafizur Rahman attended as the chief Guest. The special guest was Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M Moynul Haque and the guest of honor was Dr Safiul Ahad Sardar, convener of the Bangladesh Veterinary Association.
The seminar featured an insightful keynote presentation by Dr Md Morshedur Rahman, professor of Dairy and Poultry Science, who described milk as “more than just milk,” analyzing its social, historical and scientific importance. He also discussed the university’s world-class dairy research laboratories and the significance of the “Dairy Net Zero” initiative for sustainable, climate-friendly milk production.
In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the significance of dairy research in national development. He stated, “Milk is not just a food, but a complete source of nutrition. Its affordability can play a vital role in combating malnutrition in our country.”
The session concluded with remarks from chairperson who welcomed guests and set the tone for the day’s events. World Milk Day has been celebrated globally since 2001 under the initiative of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
