Jubo League leader jailed over Jamaat man’s murder

Jubo League leader Sohanur Rahman Azam, who was arrested in the case of the murder of a Jamaat activist in Sundarganj Upazila of the district, has been sent to jail through the court.
Sundarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Abdul Hakim Azad confirmed the matter on Sunday afternoon. Earlier, the police arrested him from his in-laws’ house adjacent to the Upazila Health Complex at 8:30 pm on Saturday.
Sohanur Rahman Azam is the son of late Nda Mia of Mirganj Balapara Village in Ward No. 1 of Sundarganj Municipality. He was serving as the joint convener of the Municipality Jubo League. He was also the organizing secretary of the Upazila Swechchhasebak League and was once an active leader of the Chhatra League.
OC Md Abdul Hakim Azad said, “Azam has been arrested as one of the unknown accused in the 2014 murder case of Jamaat activist Shahabul Islam. Later, when he was handed over to the court, the judge ordered him to be sent to jail.”
It is worth noting that on January 5, 2014, on the day of the 10th parliamentary election, Jamaat activist Shahabul Islam was hacked to death with a sharp weapon in front of the Monmath Government Primary School in Bamondanga Union of the upazila. Ten and a half years after the incident, on October 22 last year, the younger brother of the deceased, SM Shahjahan Kabir, filed a murder case with Sundarganj Police Station. Syeda Khurshid Jahan Smriti, wife of former MP Manjurul Islam Liton and vice-president of the Upazila Awami League, was made the main accused in the case. In addition, 78 names were mentioned, along with 40-50 unidentified people.
