Rallies and Gatherings Banned Indefinitely Near Secretariat and Jamuna

Desk Report

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed an indefinite ban on all types of rallies, assemblies, processions, and gatherings in and around the Secretariat and the official residence of the Chief Adviser, Jamuna. The restriction takes effect today and will remain in force until further notice.

The announcement was made in a public notice signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali on Saturday, May 10. The decision was taken under Section 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance, 1976, citing the need to maintain public order and ensure security.

The restriction covers several key areas of the capital, including Hotel Intercontinental intersection, Shahbagh intersection, Kakrail intersection, and Minto Road. No rallies, gatherings, or processions will be allowed in these zones.

While the DMP has not cited any immediate threat or specific reason for the move, it is believed that the decision comes amid the possibility of protests and rallies by various groups in recent days.

It is worth noting that the DMP issued a similar ban in August last year. Despite that, some rallies and gatherings still took place. This renewed restriction aims to reinforce public order.
