Secretariat Staff Protest for Third Day, Urge Ordinance Rollback

Government officials and employees staged demonstrations for the third consecutive day on Monday (May 26) at the Secretariat, demanding the repeal of the Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.

A protest rally began around 11:00 am in front of Building No. 6 of the Secretariat, led by Md Badiul Kabir, President of the Bangladesh Secretariat Officers and Employees United Council, and its Secretary General, Nizam Uddin Ahmed.

Shortly afterward, around 11:15 am, another faction of the same council, led by Md Nurul Islam and Mujahidul Islam, joined the rally.

Officials and staff from various ministries and departments came down from their offices to participate in the protest, leaving their work behind. The number of demonstrators continued to grow throughout the event.

The Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 allows the government to terminate employees for four types of disciplinary violations without initiating departmental proceedings—merely by issuing a show-cause notice.

The ordinance was issued by the President on Sunday evening (May 25).

Following the draft's approval at an Advisory Council meeting on May 22, Secretariat officials and employees began their protests on May 24. On Sunday (May 25), all employee organizations at the Secretariat jointly staged a demonstration against the ordinance. They have announced that protests will continue until the ordinance is withdrawn.
