Locals and Traffic Sergeant Thwart Attempted Murder in Wari

While the nation mourns the brutal killing of a young man named Sohag near Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka, another attempted murder in the capital’s Wari area was thwarted by local people and an on-duty traffic sergeant. A heart-wrenching video of Sohag’s murder—showing him being stoned to death in a crowded area without any intervention—has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage across the country. Between 8:30 and 9:00 pm on Sunday (July 13), another violent incident unfolded in a narrow alley behind the Ilisial Building on Hatkhola Road in Wari. But this time, the public did not remain silent. Eyewitnesses reported that around 9:00 pm, a group of six to seven individuals surrounded and began assaulting a 17-year-old boy named Syed Redwan Maolana.
The attackers repeatedly struck Redwan’s head with a motorcycle helmet. At one point, when they attempted to hit him with a brick, around 50 to 60 local residents—along with an on-duty traffic sergeant—quickly intervened and stopped the brutal attack. A video circulating on social media shows locals expressing anger at the two detained attackers, shouting: “It’s people like you who are ruining this country. There will be no mercy for you.” Police detained two of the attackers at the scene—Abdur Rahim Mahi (19) and Sabbir Hossain Ratul (19). The remaining assailants fled. Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Jakaria Khan of Wari Police Station said a case is being prepared against the two detainees. They claimed to be students residing in the Jatrabari area. Wari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Faisal Ahmed stated that the attackers claimed to be students and that the victim is also reportedly a student. “We are investigating whether they knew each other beforehand or if a personal dispute was involved. However, the most important aspect of this incident is that this time, the public did not remain silent. Everyone came together to resist the attack,” he added.
