RAB tightens nationwide security for Feb 21: DG
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has deployed sufficient members across the country, including the capital, to ensure foolproof security marking the great Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day. The deployment began today and will continue through February 22. In a briefing at Central Shaheed Minar on Dhaka University Campus in the capital RAB Director General (DG) AKM Shahidur Rahman today said comprehensive security measures have been adopted to prevent any untoward incidents during the observance of February 21.
"RAB has taken all necessary measures to maintain overall law and order across the country, especially centering the Central Shaheed Minar. We are fully prepared to deal with any emerging situation," he said. In response to the question, he clarified that there were no security concerns associated with the observance of Martyrs' Day. Special security arrangements have been put in place at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, where the President and the Prime Minister are scheduled to lay wreaths in memory of the Language Movement martyrs, he said.
RAB members will operate in coordination with other law enforcement agencies by setting up observation posts, watch towers, and check posts in areas under the battalion's jurisdiction, he said. CCTV and IP cameras have been installed to bring the inner and outer perimeters of the Shaheed Minar area under strict video surveillance, monitored through dedicated control rooms, he also said. The Bomb Disposal Unit and Dog Squad will conduct necessary sweeping activities to ensure the security of the premises, he continued.
In addition, RAB's Special Force will remain on standby round the clock, he stated. The RAB chief said that security has also been strengthened at all Shaheed Minars across metropolitan areas, divisional cities, districts, and upazilas where Amar Ekushey programs, including wreath-laying, discussions, and cultural events, have been organized. RAB has increased intelligence surveillance, including the deployment of plainclothes officers, and is actively working to prevent members of banned organizations from entering Shaheed Minar areas to create chaos, he said.
"All battalions will ensure security in coordination with local public representatives and other law enforcement agencies. The control room at RAB Headquarters will monitor and coordinate security arrangements nationwide," the DG added. He urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and discipline during the observance.
"If any suspicious activity or chaos is noticed, the public is requested to immediately inform the nearest patrol in-charge or the responsible RAB battalion commander to ensure prompt action," he said. He reiterated commitment to implementing all law and order directives issued on the occasion of February 21, ensuring a peaceful and dignified observance of the historic day across the country.
