Asif Nazrul: Trial of Fascists Needed Before National Polls

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul today categorically said that the trial of the killers of July Uprising must be held before the upcoming national elections. “July will never be forgotten… Certainly, I can say that the judicial process is going on in full swing and it is now fully visible... I firmly believe that the fascists must be tried before the national elections,” he said. The adviser made the remarks while delivering his speech of welcome at an event held prior to the screening of the premiere show of the documentary “Shraban Bidroho” (July Uprising) at the National Museum auditorium in the city’s Shahbagh area. Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam, Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, and martyred journalist Tahir Zaman’s mother Shamsi Ara Zaman also spoke on the occasion, with Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farzana in the chair. Speaking on the occasion, Asif Nazrul said, “We have to make the judiciary acceptable. You have no reason to be disappointed. When we took charge of the government, we were thinking about justice, reforms, rehabilitation of the July martyrs and the elections. We have to make the judiciary very acceptable.”

He said the activists of Sheikh Hasina's fascist party have been sitting with thousands of crores of taka to disrupt the trial process. They will try to mislead the people of Bangladesh, he added. The adviser said July will never be forgotten. “This country (Bangladesh) belongs to all of us,” he added. The documentary “Shraban Bidhroho” or July Uprising, made on the historic event of the July Uprising of 2024, was produced by the Department of Film and Publications (DFP) under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and directed by Arifur Rahman. This documentary shows the background of the movement, chronology of the events of the July Uprising, and changes in the consciousness of students and the common people against the fascist regime. The documentary presents memoirs of the relatives of the martyrs, student leaders who participated in the movement, students, and prominent figures of society, as well as images of torture during the movement. This 30-minute documentary includes rare videos, still photographs, and graffiti from the movement, which are living documents of the July Uprising.

The documentary brings to life the cruelty of the law enforcement agencies and repression of the then dictator, sometimes through direct visualization, sometimes with the help of animation. Shraban Bidroho is not just a documentary; it is a document of time, telling the story of a successful mass uprising to future generations, speakers said.
