'Awarapan 2' Review: Nostalgia, Action, and the Return of Emraan Hashmi

This sequel is set approximately 19 years after the 2007 epic tragedy and cult classic film 'Awarapan'. Director Nitin Kakkar and producer Vishesh Films have taken a different turn from the point where the character of Shiv Pandit faced extreme loneliness and death at the climax of the first movie. This is not just a conventional sequel, but the story of an inner rebirth of a middle-aged man who has been consumed for two decades by guilt and the memories of his lost love, Aaliyah (Shriya Saran).

• Beginning and Emptiness: After spending a long period of his life in isolation, Shiv’s life takes an unexpected turn when he rescues an abandoned girl child. Named ‘Aaliyah’ after his deceased love, the child is cruelly snatched away by destiny and falls into the clutches of an international human trafficking ring.
• Mission Bangkok: With the assistance of Interpol officer Samarth Singh (Atul Kumar), Shiv enters the dark underbelly of Bangkok. There, he is forced to confront the influential mafia family consisting of Amrit Singh (Barun Chanda) and his reckless son Zorawar Singh (Poorab Kohli).
• Twists and Relationship Dynamics: Amidst this dirty underworld game, Shiv crosses paths with Zara Singh (Disha Patani). Zara opposes her family's criminal activities and is secretly fighting to protect her autistic brother, Sikandar (Aniruddh Rawal). This sudden connection between Shiv and Zara creates a mature romantic atmosphere, adding an emotional layer for viewers amidst the core action thriller.

• Emraan Hashmi (Shiv Pandit): Emraan is the absolute soul of the film. His maturity in acting is evident here. Rather than dialogue, his eyes, tired gaze, and occasional bursts of rage bring the character of Shiv to life. His face-offs with the villains clearly display his two decades of acting experience.
• Disha Patani (Zara): As Zara, a music-lover with a tender heart, Disha tries to balance her glamour and emotions. Her cat-and-mouse game to protect her brother and her chemistry with Shiv were particularly praised.
• Strength of Supporting Characters: Shabana Azmi (as Nafisa Nawab) commands a serious, heavy atmosphere whenever she appears on screen. Although her screen time is limited due to script constraints, the desire for a larger presence lingers. Meanwhile, Poorab Kohli’s Zorawar adopts a traditional gangster archetype, but his impulsive nature maintains the narrative's thrills.

• The locales of Bangkok, Malaysia, and Rajasthan have been beautifully captured. The neon-lit underworld of Bangkok and the classic dark tone give the film an international visual look.
• The action sequences prioritize raw, gritty hand-to-hand combat over overly exaggerated or physics-defying stunts, perfectly fitting Shiv's character.

True to the legacy of Emraan Hashmi films, the music is a major highlight. Composed by Mithun and Amaal Mallik, the songs and background score act as vital catalysts in sustaining the film's core emotions. Theatergoers experienced a nostalgic ambiance blending the melodies of the original Awarapan with modern tracks.

Critics noted that while the screenplay is somewhat predictable and doesn't completely overshadow the unique tragedy of the first film, it stands out as a pure, mass commercial entertainer amidst contemporary formulaic thrillers. Capitalizing on the Independence Day long weekend, the film dominated the box office and was embraced by Emraan's fans not merely as a sequel, but as an emotional reunion.
