CA Consoles Family of Bangladesh-Origin NY Officer Didarul, Killed in Line of Duty
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed his deep condolences to the family of Bangladeshi-origin US police officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in a gunman’s attack here in July this year. He also handed over a crest to the family members of Didarul as a mark of respect to him when they met Professor Yunus at his hotel here tonight (NY local time). Didarul’s father Mohammad Abdur Rab, mother Minara Begum, two sons Ayhan Islam and Azhan Islam, brother Kamrul Hasan, nephew Adian Hasan, sister Nadima Begum, and paternal uncle Ahmed Jamal Uddin were present at the meeting.
National Citizen Party (NCP) Member-Secretary Akhter Hossen and first Senior Joint Member Secretary Dr Tasnim Jara, who are accompanying the Chief Adviser on the US trip, were also present. Consoling the family members of Didarul Islam, Prof Yunus said, “I read about the incident in the newspapers and was utterly shocked. I could not comprehend how such a tragedy could happen.” “On television, I saw the massive gathering at his final farewell in New York. He received profound respect, and love from thousands of people. When I was planning my visit to New York, I felt it was essential to meet you,” he added.
The family members said Didarul Islam was a dedicated and highly appreciated officer in the New York Police Department (NYPD). He joined the force in 2021 and was serving the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. He left behind two sons. Didarul was shot dead on Park Avenue in Manhattan by a gunman on July 28 this year when the young attacker had stormed into a high-rise corporate building and opened fire indiscriminately before killing himself. Didarul was fatally shot when he attempted to stop the assailant and protect others. According to his family, his body bore eight to ten bullet wounds.
