International Day of Older Persons observed in Rajshahi
The 36th International Day of Older Persons 2026 was observed with the theme 'The Era of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives' in Rajshahi.
On Thursday, a colorful rally and discussion meeting were organized on the occasion of the day, arranged by the Bangladesh Probin Hitoishi Sangha and the Institute of Geriatrics, Rajshahi Branch, with the cooperation of the District Administration and the District Department of Social Services.
A colorful procession started in front of Hotel Nice at Sahebbazar in the city. The procession paraded through the main roads of the city and ended at the same place again.
Later, a discussion meeting titled 'Respect, Security and Healthcare for the Elderly' was held at the auditorium of Hotel Nice.
In his speech as the chief guest at the discussion meeting, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi, Sabur Ali, said that senior citizens are an invaluable asset to society and family.
Their knowledge and practical experience of a long life act as a guide for the next generation. Family, society and the state must work together to ensure respect, adequate security, modern healthcare and social dignity for the elderly.
Highlighting the positive aspects of increasing life expectancy, the Additional Deputy Commissioner further said that, along with the increase in life expectancy, the number of elderly people in society is also increasing.
Therefore, it is now the demand of the time to create an elderly-friendly environment in all spheres by giving priority to their daily needs and rights.
At the same time, he emphasized eliminating the loneliness of the elderly, providing regular healthcare and their active involvement in various social activities.
The event was presided over by Dr. D. M. Zahurul Islam, President of the Bangladesh Probin Hitoishi Sangha and Institute of Geriatrics, Rajshahi Branch. Tapas Falia, Additional Director of the Divisional Social Services Office, spoke as a special guest.
Among others present at the meeting were the organization's Vice President and Editor of Sonali Sangbad, Liaquat Ali and Sher Shah, General Secretary Khandaker Hasan Kabir, Executive Member Dr. Wasim Hossain and Joint General Secretary Saharuzzaman, along with leaders of various levels of the organization and elderly members.
Speakers at the discussion meeting strongly demanded increased social protection for the elderly and called for rebuilding an elderly-friendly society in line with the growing number of long-lived people.
