DMC Closed Indefinitely, Students Ordered to Vacate Hostels

Dhaka Medical College (DMC) has announced the indefinite suspension of academic activities for its MBBS programme following an emergency meeting of the academic council on Saturday, June 21. The decision, effective from Sunday, June 22, requires all students to vacate college hostels by 12 noon on the same day, according to a notification signed by Principal Professor Dr Md Kamrul Alam. The closure stems from ongoing disruptions in the academic environment, exacerbated by student protests and non-cooperation. The notification highlighted that, despite coordination with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Directorate of Health Education to address student concerns, no significant progress has been made.  Notably, students have refused to vacate the hazardous fourth floor of the Dr Fazle Rabbi hostel, and the new K-82 batch boycotted their orientation programme, an action the college authorities described as a “black chapter” in DMC’s history.

The academic council deemed the indefinite suspension necessary to resolve the impasse and restore order. However, students participating in professional MBBS examinations and international students are exempt from this decision. The council expressed optimism that student cooperation could expedite a resolution to the crisis, allowing academic activities to resume swiftly.
