DSCC Steps Up Dengue Control Drive From Manda to DU TSC
South City Corporation has intensified efforts to control dengue through coordinated cleanliness, mosquito-control, public awareness and tree-planting initiatives across capital.
As part of campaign, DSCC organised programme titled "Destroy Mosquito Breeding Grounds, Control Dengue and Tree Plantation Programme-2026" in Manda area, while special cleanliness and mosquito-control drive was conducted at Teacher-Student Centre of University of Dhaka.
State Minister for Railways, Roads and Highways Habibur Rashid Habib attended Manda programme as special guest. DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam attended as chief guest.
At University of Dhaka, Salam also attended TSC cleanliness and mosquito-control campaign as chief guest, while Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof A B M Obaidul Islam inaugurated programme.
Awareness rally in Manda:
Manda programme began with awareness rally from Bank Colony area. Rally passed through several roads before ending at premises of Haider Ali School and College, where neem saplings were planted.
Public awareness meeting was later held on school premises to highlight importance of eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, preventing dengue and protecting environment.
Speakers at meeting stressed that dengue prevention requires more than conventional mosquito-control operations. They said mosquito breeding sites must be eliminated alongside sustained public awareness campaigns.
They urged residents to regularly inspect homes, educational institutions, construction sites, drains and surrounding areas to ensure water does not remain stagnant.
Speakers also emphasised that dengue prevention cannot be sole responsibility of city corporations or government agencies. Residents must also play active role by removing stagnant water from rooftops, flower pots, discarded containers, drains and other potential breeding sites of Aedes mosquitoes.
Tree-planting initiative was also highlighted as part of efforts to protect environment and promote greener urban landscape.
Cleanliness and mosquito-control drive at DU TSC
Meanwhile, special cleanliness and mosquito-control campaign was held at TSC premises of University of Dhaka Saturday morning under slogan "Build the Habit of Cleanliness, Build a Vibrant Campus."
Programme was organised by DSCC with consent of University of Dhaka administration and with overall cooperation from Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
Campaign began at around 8:30 a.m., followed by cleanliness and mosquito-control activities in different parts of campus throughout day.
During drive, waste and garbage were removed from TSC and other campus areas, stagnant water was cleared, and potential breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes were identified and eliminated.
Students and other campus users were also encouraged to take preventive measures against dengue and maintain cleanliness across university premises.
Dhaka University JCD President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos and General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, along with leaders and activists of organisation, participated in campaign.
Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos said maintaining clean campus would require coordinated efforts by university administration, DSCC, teachers, students, officials and employees.
Nahiduzzaman Shipon said initiative was taken as part of organisation's "Green & Clean Campus First" campaign, with focus on improving waste management across university.
Focus on waste management
Earlier, at meeting between Dhaka University administration and JCD unit Sept 17, discussions were held on installing around 200 dustbins across campus to improve waste management.
Meeting also discussed participation of JCD leaders and activists in "Clean Day" programme scheduled for Oct 3.
During Saturday's campaign, students were urged not to throw waste indiscriminately and to use designated disposal points. They were also advised to prevent water from accumulating in flower pots, drains and other areas that could become breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.
DSCC has been conducting special cleanliness and mosquito-control drives in all 75 wards of capital since Sept 26 under its weekly "Cleaning Day" initiative.
Campaign at University of Dhaka is part of corporation's broader effort to strengthen dengue prevention, improve urban cleanliness and raise public awareness.
Organisers expressed hope that regular cleaning activities, systematic destruction of mosquito breeding grounds and greater public awareness would help reduce dengue risks while contributing to cleaner, greener and more vibrant environment in capital.
