Gaibandha cybercrime case accused arrested in Uttara, Dhaka

The Special Response Battalion (SRB)-13 arrested the prime accused in a cybercrime case of Gaibandha Sadar police station from the Uttara area in Dhaka city yesterday.

The arrestee is Md Jahangir Hasan, 36, son of Md Mokhlesur Rahman of Baguria village in Gidari union under Sadar police station of Gaibandha district, a press release said.

According to the complaint filed by the victim's husband, Md Saiful Alam, 52, the victim is his wife.

The accused secretly recorded the plaintiff's wife bathing on his mobile phone and posted the images on Facebook.

When the plaintiff and the victim saw the Facebook post and requested the accused to delete it, he refused and threatened to post a combined image featuring both the victim and the plaintiff on Facebook.

On July 3, 2026, at 12:45 pm, the accused called the victim's mobile phone and demanded an extortion sum of Tk 15,00,000.

He threatened that if the demand was not met, he would make those images, along with other obscene photos, go viral by posting them on Facebook and various websites.

Following this incident, the victim's husband filed a case under the Cyber Security Act, 2026 at Gaibandha Sadar police station on July 9, 2026.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team comprising SRB-13 from Gaibandha Camp and SRB-1 from Uttara Camp in Dhaka arrested the prime accused Md Jahangir Hasan from the Uttara area under Uttara East police station in Dhaka city yesterday.

The accused has been handed over to Gaibandha Sadar police station for further legal proceedings, the release added.
