Nahid demands home minister’s resignation citing failure

NCP Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam today said the home minister had “already failed” to maintain law and order and should step down.

“If a person fails, he cannot remain in that responsibility, and he should not,” he said at a press conference at the party’s central office in Banglamotor around 11:00am.

Nahid also criticised Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent speech at the United Nations General Assembly, saying it failed to reflect people’s aspirations and address the country’s major crises.

“The people’s hopes and aspirations were not reflected at all in the UN speech,” he said, citing the fuel crisis, border killings, push-ins, the Rohingya crisis, the Teesta project, economic challenges, and demands for reform and justice following the July Uprising.

He alleged that the administration had remained inactive during recent incidents of vandalism and occupation, including the attack on content creator Salman Muqtadir’s studio.

On police reform, Nahid said the lack of reforms had allowed promotions and postings to remain dependent on the government, leading to a return to partisan policing.

He also opposed excluding candidates from government recruitment through police verification without clear evidence, pledging NCP support for those unfairly disqualified.

Regarding constitutional reform, Nahid demanded that the Constitution Reform Council convene and implement reform proposals, accusing the Constitution Amendment Committee of delaying the process.

He warned that the NCP and its allies would intensify their programmes if the demand was not met.

Regarding local government elections, Nahid demanded that the polls be held on time and warned against electoral engineering.

He added that the NCP would contest independently and support suitable young, honest and patriotic candidates.
