A murder case has been filed against five named persons and two to three unidentified individuals over the killing of Syed Humayun Kabir, joint convener of Khulna Metropolitan Tanti Dal.

Meanwhile, police have arrested one of the named accused.

The victim's son, Syed Nur Amin Souhartha, filed the case with Aranghata Police Station on Sunday night.

The arrested accused, Sheikh Siddiq, 53, was detained on Sunday night, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Aranghata Police Station Md. Halimur Rahman confirmed on Monday morning.

Police are conducting operations to arrest the other accused, he said.

Siddiq is the son of late Sheikh Idris Ali, also known as Idil Fakir, of Rayermohol Paschimpara in the city.

According to police sources, four to five assailants, including one with a covered face, arrived at the victim's restaurant, Al-Cantino, in an easy-bike and launched an attack with locally made weapons.

The attack reportedly stemmed from a dispute over instalments for a refrigerator purchased from a shop owned by local Chhatra Dal activist Arafat. Humayun Kabir allegedly failed to pay the instalments on time, leading to an argument and physical altercation involving him, Arafat and Fayek.

The assailants subsequently attacked Humayun Kabir with locally made weapons.

He was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.

Humayun Kabir was killed on Sunday evening at his restaurant near Rayermohol Boro Mosque in the city. He was the son of Syed Anwar Ali of the same area.
