DU VC urges all to build a non Disparity, just & democratic

Keeping the spirit of the July Uprising, we must build a non-discriminatory, just and democratic Bangladesh: DU Vice-Chancellor Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam has called on everyone to work together to build a non-discriminatory, just and democratic Bangladesh, keeping the spirit of the July Uprising. He said that the July Uprising against fascism and authoritarianism was an expression of the people's long-standing deprivation and democratic aspirations. The history of this sacrifice should not be forgotten.

 He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled 'The Journey from Fascism to Democracy' organized by the Faculty of Law of Dhaka University on Tuesday to mark the second anniversary of the July Uprising. Dean of the Faculty of Law Professor Dr. Mohammad Ikramul Haque presided over the seminar. Former advisor and professor of the Department of Law Dr. Asif Nazrul. The special speaker was Professor of Law, Dr. Rowan Uddin Khan. The welcome address was delivered by Professor of Law, Dr. Md. Touhidul Islam, Chairman of the Law Department. The Vice-Chancellor said that in the last one and a half decades, democratic values, freedom of expression and tolerance for dissent have been severely damaged in the country.

 Teachers and students have also faced various types of harassment and pressure due to expressing dissent on the university campus. He highlighted his personal experience and said that he too had to face various adversities for not compromising on policy issues. However, he was able to remain firm due to the cooperation of his colleagues and trust in justice.

Professor Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam said that the basic foundation of democracy is respect for the opinion of the majority and the establishment of the rule of law. But for a long time, the culture of single decision-making in the country, distrust of the electoral system and the tendency to ignore the opinions of the people have weakened democratic institutions. The July mass uprising was born from this reality. He said, the courage, sacrifice and participation of the students in the July 2024 movement has started a new chapter in the history of the country.

 The nation will always remember the sacrifice of the martyrs of this movement and the contribution of the injured with respect. He prayed for the forgiveness of the souls of the martyrs and the speedy recovery of the injured. The Vice Chancellor also said, the memory of July should not be just a formality. This spirit must be embodied in our state, society and educational institutions, so that no fascism, discrimination or tyranny can rise again in the future.

 He said, a free, fair and participatory election in Bangladesh is one of the prerequisites for strengthening democracy. Referring to the recent electoral experience, he emphasized on maintaining the continuity of peaceful, acceptable and violence-free elections in the future as well.

 Institute of Business Administration: A discussion meeting and prayer meeting were held at the institute on this occasion on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the initiative of the Institute of Business Administration. Director of the Institute of Business Administration, Professor Dr. Abu Yusuf Md. Abdullah, the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) of the university, Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, was present as the chief guest. National University Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Md. Lutfar Rahman spoke as the main discussant. The program began with the recitation of the Holy Quran.

 Later, Professor Dr. Md. Mohiuddin, convener of the 2nd anniversary celebration committee of the July Uprising, delivered the welcome speech. Rubayet Ferdous Ranil, a student of the 32nd batch of BBA, spoke on behalf of the students. Department of Philosophy: On this occasion, a discussion meeting titled 'July Uprising 2024' was held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the initiative of the Department of Philosophy, in Room No. 2028 of the Kala Bhavan.

 Professor Dr. Md. Nuruzzaman, Chairman of the Department of Philosophy, presided over the program, and Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Sarkar, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, spoke as the chief guest. Convener of the department's July Commemoration Committee, Professor Dr. Mohammad Daud Khan, Professor Dr. Shah Kawsar Mustafa Abululai, Professor A K M Yunus, Dr. Ahmed Ullah, Muhammad Wahidul Alam, Aruna Khatun Jinia, Khandaker Tofail Ahmed, Tapsi Rabeya and Hamidur Rahman were present. In addition, the university's Pharmacy Department, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall held separate programs on the July Uprising.
