Kanchpur–Ilisha ferry link opens, boosting Dhaka–Bhola connectivity

A long-awaited direct ferry connection between Kanchpur in Narayanganj and Ilisha in Bhola was officially launched Tuesday, marking a significant step toward strengthening connectivity between Dhaka and the country’s southern coastal region.

Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, MP, inaugurated the service by cutting a ribbon at the Kanchpur Ferry Terminal at 5:00 p.m.

The new route, operated by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), is expected to create a more direct and efficient transportation corridor for passengers, vehicles and commercial goods between the central and southern parts of the country.

The service is particularly significant for Bhola, an island district that has long faced transportation challenges due to its geographical isolation. The new direct waterway is expected to reduce logistical difficulties and provide businesses and residents with a more convenient link to Narayanganj and the capital, Dhaka.

Two ferries in operation

Experimental ferry operations on the Kanchpur–Ilisha route began on Aug. 27, 2026. Two BIWTC ferries—MV Begum Sufia Kamal and MV Begum Rokeya—are currently operating on the route.

One ferry leaves daily from each end of the route. A one-way trip between Kanchpur and Ilisha takes approximately eight hours, according to officials.

The introduction of the direct service is expected to facilitate the movement of trucks, commercial vehicles, passengers and essential commodities, creating new opportunities for trade and business between Bhola and the wider Dhaka region.

Boost expected for southern economy

Officials and local stakeholders believe the new ferry link could have a broader economic impact beyond transportation. Improved movement of goods is expected to help farmers, traders and businesses transport agricultural and other products to major markets more efficiently. At the same time, easier passenger connectivity could improve access to education, healthcare, employment and other essential services.

The route is also expected to strengthen the economic integration of Bhola with Narayanganj and Dhaka, potentially accelerating commercial activity across the southern region. The government views the expansion of direct ferry connectivity as part of its efforts to improve transportation infrastructure, address the connectivity challenges of island and coastal communities and promote balanced regional economic development.

Senior officials attend inauguration

Shipping Ministry Secretary Zakaria, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Md. Muhidul Islam, BIWTC Chairman ATM Abdul Bari Danny, Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Raihan Kabir, Superintendent of Police Habibur Rahman, along with senior government officials, representatives of relevant agencies and local stakeholders, attended the inauguration ceremony.

The launch of the Kanchpur–Ilisha service is being seen as an important addition to Bangladesh’s inland water transport network, offering a direct maritime connection that could play a growing role in the movement of people and goods between the capital region and the southern coastal belt.
